It’s about to be Spring Break! It’s time to book an epic adventure with our kids and make some core memories. Our kids are out of school, including the weekends, for a total of nine days. The possibilities are endless, but this doesn’t have to be a daunting task. I always start with two things. Number one, I look at what the weather is going to be like in different areas. My family thrives in warm weather, so I’m going to book somewhere most likely South of us, and keep in mind what type of things we like to do together. You need to decide if you want an adventure or if ya’ll want to relax?
Watch the Weather
The weather can be tricky. Our Spring Break is in Mid-March. Unfortunately, you never know what you’re going to get during that time frame. We went to San Antonio, TX last year and were met with a polar vortex that kept the weather chilly. Not quite the 70’s and above we were dreaming about. I like to look at what the weather has averaged in the past couple of years in the location I choose, so I have a round-about idea of what to expect. After choosing a few locations with promising weather, I look at, what do they have to offer as far as entertainment and food.
Location, Location, Location
My husband and I are foodies, and we like to sight see, especially unfamiliar places. My boys are 9 and 13, so we need to do something active that will pique their interest, as well. I also look at what holidays are happening during that timeframe, because it can affect crowd size. It also offers some wonderful experiences depending on how the locals decide to celebrate the overlapping holiday. For us, it’s always St. Patrick’s Day.
Plan for Special Days and Crowds
San Antonio offered a delightful St. Patrick’s Day festival and river parade. We enjoyed some authentic Tex-mex while watching the locals dye the river green in honor of Old St. Patrick. The boys stood on the riverbank and caught necklaces and candy that were being thrown by playfully decorated river boats. The river cruises there are a must do. I suggest one during the day and one at night. As far as crowd size, it was manageable, but most restaurants required a reservation.
